Do Dogs Go to Heaven?

This is a 'church sign' debate, being played out in a Southern town, between the Catholic Church and a fundamentalist Presbyterian church.

The Catholics are displaying a much better sense of humor!

I rescued a human today...
Author unknown

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

"Just a Dog"
by Richard Biby

From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog."

They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.

Because of "just a dog", I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog", but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man or woman."

So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog" just smile...  because they "just don't understand."

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS
  1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
  2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
  3. Place your trust in me.  It is crucial for my well-being.
  4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainments, but I have only YOU.
  5. Talk to me.  Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
  6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
  7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet...I choose not to.
  8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
  9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
  10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Then, Adopt a Dog!

If you want someone who will eat

whatever you put in front of him

and never say its not quite

as good as his mothers

...then, adopt a dog!

If you want someone always

willing to go out, at any hour,

for as long and wherever you want ..

...then, adopt a dog!

If you want someone who will

never touch the remote, doesn't care

about football, and can sit next to you

as you watch romantic movies

...then, adopt a dog!

If you want someone who is

content to get on your bed just to

warm your feet and whom you

can push off if he snores

...then, adopt a dog!

If you want someone who never

criticizes what you do, doesn't care

if you are pretty or ugly, fat or thin,

young or old, who acts as if

every word you say is especially

worthy of listening to, and loves

you unconditionally, perpetually .

...then, adopt a dog!

BUT, on the other hand, if you want someone

who will never come when you call,

ignores you totally when you come home,

leaves hair all over the place,

walks all over you, runs around all night

and only comes home to eat and sleep,

and acts as if your entire existence

is solely to ensure their happiness

and never appreciates a thing you do,

...then, adopt a CAT!

Now be honest, you thought I was gonna say
... marry a man, didn't you?
